چکیده

The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect causes a change in the apparent brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation towards a cluster of galaxies or any other reservoir of hot plasma. Measurements of the effect provide distinctly different information about cluster properties than X-ray imaging data, while combining X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data leads to new insights into the structures of cluster atmospheres. The effect is redshift-independent, and so provides a unique probe of the structure of the Universe on the largest scales. The present review discusses the theory of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect and collects published results for many clusters, presents the overall conclusions that may be drawn from the detections so far, and discusses the prospects for future research on the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effects. Astrophysical Context Compton scattering is one of the major physical processes that couples matter and radiation. Its importance is often stressed in highly relativistic environments where large energy transfers occur: for example, in the synchrotron self-Compton process that may be responsible for much of the X-radiation from active galactic nuclei (e.g., Fabian et al. 1986). However, the Compton process also has observable consequences in low-energy environments, where small energy transfers occur. Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. Ii. Inclusion of Peculiar Velocities

We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect to the system moving with a velocity ~ β ≡ ~v/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. In the present formalism, the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect for the cluster of galaxies with a peculiar velocity ~ β is derived in a straightforward manner by the Lorentz boost of the generalized Kompaneets...

Using the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect to Probe the Gas in Clusters

The thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect is an important probe of clusters of galaxies, and has the attractive property of being proportional to the thermal energy content of the intracluster medium. With the assistance of X-ray data, the effect can be used to measure the number of hot electrons in clusters, and thus measure cluster baryon contents. Cluster absolute distances and other structural ...

Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect by Multiple Scattering : Numerical Solution of the Transfer Equations

The radiative transfer equations for multiple inverse Compton scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) by the hot intra-cluster electrons are solved numerically. The spherical isothermal and inhomogeneous β model has been considered for the electron distribution. The anisotropy of the CMBR caused by scattering, known as thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect, along the radial a...

Reconstructing Three-dimensional Structure of Underlying Triaxial Dark Halos From X-ray and Sunyaev–Zel’dovich Effect Observations of Galaxy Clusters

While the use of galaxy clusters as tools to probe cosmology is established, their conventional description still relies on the spherical and/or isothermal models that were proposed more than 20 years ago. We present, instead, a deprojection method to extract their intrinsic properties from X-ray and Sunyaev– Zel’dovich effect observations in order to improve our understanding of cluster physic...

The Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect with the Cosmic Background Imager

We are engaged in a program with the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI), a 13-element interferometer recently installed at 5000 m in the Chilean Andes, to measure H0 with 10% accuracy through observations of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in a sample of nearby clusters. We discuss the capabilities of this new instrument and present our cluster sample and selection criteria, along with results from d...
